Inspiration has a funny way of turning up unexpectedly. The selection of the colourful and exuberant annual Ye-Yee-Ye festival in Jamestown, Accra, Ghana hap-pened in the most surprising of manners. Photographer James Tennessee Briandt approached me with a series of photo-graphs, with intentions of earning a chance to oversee a Boy.Brother.Friend shoot, unbeknownst to him, the shoot had already happened, and the results were in his possession, being presented to me in the portfolio. The tenacity in the midst of the darting, and presumably judgemental eyes of onlookers on the streets was captured very boldly in these photographs. The boldness and simultaneously carefree nature of the male crossdressers at this local event were cap-tured too vividly for this to be nothing more than a part of a proposal. In many ways, this featured cover is a toast to the power of boldness, from James, and from the men on the streets of Jamestown, Accra, who flaunt their freedom of expression even in the direct gaze of a society that often seeks to stifle such expression.
